Met still disproportionately male and white

202020 Challenge
Created on
27 January 2016

This meeting took place on 28 January 2016. Read the transcript here.

It is one year on since the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee report: ‘The diversity of the Met's frontline’ was published. In that time, the proportion of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) officers working for the Met (12 per cent) has increased by only one percentage point.

Despite targeted efforts, BAME women remain severely underrepresented, accounting for only three per cent of the Met’s workforce.

Consequently, the Met still does not look like the city it polices.

The Police and Crime Committee will tomorrow question the Met and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) about why it was unable to appoint more BAME police officers in its latest recruitment round and what is being done to boost representation.

The guests are;

  • Craig Mackey QPM, Deputy Commissioner, Metropolitan Police Service
  • Stephen Greenhalgh, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)

Other topics include;

  • Firearms officers – funding and where additional numbers will be drawn from
  • Missing persons (Sian Blake investigation)
  • Bail arrangements for terrorism suspects
  • Transfer of healthcare commissioning in police custody

The meeting will take place on Thursday 28 January from 10.00am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
