News from Darren Johnson (past staff): Majority of outer London to miss out on ‘mini Holland’ revolution

Created on
10 March 2014

Transport for London this morning announced the three boroughs which have successfully secured funding through the mini Hollands programme.

Enfield, Kingston and Waltham Forest are the successful boroughs and will receive £30 million each.

Bexley, Ealing, Merton and Richmond were commended for ‘exceptional proposals’. TfL pledged to take forward some aspects of their plans using the remaining £10 million from its £100m pot.

Last year TfL invited outer London boroughs to become “mini-Hollands” for the bicycle in a competitive bidding process.

Darren Johnson AM said:

“This is exciting news for around a sixth of the outer London boroughs, but will leave cyclists and those wanting to cycle disappointed in all the rest. If there are four runners-up who have exceptional plans, then the Mayor should be finding the money to get fully behind them. Big ideas and exceptional plans should not be left treading water for ten years."

“These mini-Hollands should be a test bed for ideas to make cycling safe and enjoyable, but there is no money and no plan to roll this idea out to the rest of outer London. The Mayor needs to increase the cycling budget in Transport for London’s ten year plan, so that we can get safer cycling rolled out to the other boroughs as soon as possible.”
