Mayor must demonstrate commitment to cycling, says Green AM

Caroline Russell AM has welcomed a fresh pledge from the Mayor of London to increase spending on cycling safety and triple the current superhighway provision, while urging him not to axe plans for a key west London cycle route.

Reports have suggested that plans for the segregated cycle route from west London into the city could be scrapped.

Caroline Russell AM commented:

“I welcome the Mayor re-stating his manifesto pledge to make London a byword for cycling. We absolutely need more safe segregated cycle lanes to encourage people out of cars and onto bikes, which take up far less road space and do not pollute the air."

"But I'm concerned by reports that the Mayor could scrap plans for the only safe cycle route between west London and the city. The Westway cycle superhighway has huge support, as seen in the public consultation. If the Mayor has scrapped the route for good reasons, he needs to make them clear and bring forward something much better.”

“The newly-built sections of superhighway in central London have been a massive success and huge numbers of people are using them daily. I urge the Mayor to look at the evidence before making any decisions.”
