Northern Line problems discussed at Transport Committee

20 October 2005

Commenting on what was said by Tube Lines, London Underground, RMT & ASLEF at the London Assembly Transport Committee meeting today at City Hall, Roger Evans, Chair of the Committee, said:

"This is a sad state of affairs. Proper control must be taken over the maintenance of the Underground. London Underground has found Alstom is failing the Northern Line. They are just not up to the job. Although we've been given guarantees for improvements, it is unclear when these will happen.

"The maintenance arrangements on the Tube have allowed poor performing companies to keep working on the network with quick and often inadequate short-term fixes. Something must be done now to change this."
