The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
"I want to praise and personally thank the police, fire and ambulance services and Transport for London staff for their outstanding bravery, leadership and dedication during the extremely dangerous events of August. Over 200 officers were injured during the disturbances and I wish them all a speedy recovery. Firefighters put life and limb in danger to tackle blazing buildings. TfL staff went beyond the call of duty to keep London moving and ambulance staff and their hospital colleagues worked tirelessly to get to and treat those injured.
"This was sheer criminality on an unprecedented scale which no one could have predicted. Our message is loud and clear: we will not tolerate this behaviour in our city and those involved in criminal acts are facing the full force of the law. Thousands of arrests have already been made and perpetrators have been brought to book. There is nowhere to hide for anyone involved. You will be caught and face justice.
"The riots also showed the other face of our beloved city: the true spirit of London as communities gathered together with their brooms to help clean up after the riots. Londoners leant a hand to their friends, raised money for local businesses which had been destroyed, or just looked out for vulnerable neighbours."
