London became European Volunteering Capital 2016 in recognition of its innovative programmes and the continuation of the legacy of volunteering from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since then, the Mayor’s volunteering initiative Team London has mobilised over 150,000 active volunteers in all areas, including cultural events.
One of such events was Lumiere London. In January 2016, central London was transformed with 3D projections, installations and other extraordinary light works. The largest-ever light festival to take place in the city, Lumiere London attracted one million visitors to the free event which was produced by Artichoke and supported by the Mayor of London.
Using the city as their canvas, more than 20 artists from all over the world illuminated London’s iconic buildings and landmarks. Transforming the city’s architecture and urban landscape through the West End and King’s Cross, Lumiere London bathed the city in a completely new light for four nights during the darkest days of winter. This major outdoor showcase of creativity helped reaffirm London's status as one of the world’s leading destination for culture and the arts.
More than 250 volunteers from Team London used their local expertise and knowledge of the artworks to help make the festival a success.
