Tackling HIV stigma during HIV Testing Week, 19 – 25 November

19 November 2016

To mark HIV testing week the Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has written about the work we’re doing to make London a healthier and fairer city.

During my campaign, I pledged to renew the focus on HIV prevention and screening and ensure that effective information on HIV is reaching the right audiences.

HIV is a major public health challenge for London: around two fifths of people being treated for HIV in England are Londoners, and our city’s diagnosis rate is much higher than for England overall. But, Londoners are less likely to have a good understanding of HIV than those in other parts of the country.

People affected by HIV can live long, healthy lives with the right treatment and support, yet some face discrimination and disadvantage. Sharing information and challenging stigma will help to ensure that more Londoners living with HIV are treated fairly, as well as helping to stop the spread of HIV by helping people get tested.

On Wednesday 23 November, the Terrence Higgins Trust and Positive East will be here at City Hall to offer visitors advice, information and where to access free and confidential testing.
