  • After his apprenticeship: James progressed on to a GLA Higher Apprenticeship (NVQ level 4 in Project Management) in the Intelligence Team

Why did you want to do an apprenticeship at City Hall?

I had previously worked as a Special Constable in the Metropolitan Police, which was what made me especially interested in the work of the Communities and Intelligence unit at City Hall. My everyday interactions with the community in my previous role had made me aware of the important role Londoners play in improving the capital and ensuring that it’s a welcoming and safe place to live.

What were you doing before your apprenticeship here?

I worked for the Metropolitan Police as a voluntary Special Constable for three years, engaging with members of the public to ensure that a positive police presence was maintained.

I then worked in quite a different role within a medium sized digital printing organisation based in Slough. It was a fast paced environment with activities that had short turnaround times. I felt that the work in this role wasn’t varied enough, so I went on to look for opportunities in London.

How did you hear about the vacancy?

I knew university wasn’t for me and was familiar with the National Apprenticeship Scheme website. I spent some time searching it for opportunities. When I saw the apprenticeship in Business Administration at City Hall, I knew this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the principle branch of London government, and its work directly affects Londoners. Therefore, I was keen to be part of the dynamic GLA team.

What were your day-to-day responsibilities as an apprentice?

My role as a GLA apprentice, within the Opinion Research team, consisted of a structured programme of learning for non-graduates. On the job, I worked with members of the intelligence unit to make a real contribution to what it delivers. I’ve supported research and analytical services which inform policy making and strategy development.

What did you find most useful?

The advanced apprenticeship scheme within the GLA has given me the opportunity to learn about the huge range of important areas in which the Authority is involved. It has allowed me to broaden my experience and skills in administration and project support whilst gaining an NVQ Level 3 in Business administration.

I used this experience to help me apply and successfully obtain a Level 4 higher apprenticeship role in Project Management within the Intelligence Unit. This will hopefully enable me to further develop competencies and skills such as stakeholder management, dealing with complexity and communication. Project management makes for a very varied role and the relevant skills have been key in my first year of development. I look forward to building on this.

What did you find challenging about your apprenticeship?

Managing my NVQ work as well as day-to-day tasks was often time consuming. I initially worked closely with my line manager to find ways of better managing my time, and over the course of my apprenticeship this was a skill I developed effectively.

What was the most inspiring thing that happened during your apprenticeship?

I was fully involved from day one and have had the opportunity to work on some really interesting projects, even helping some of the other apprentices at events held at City Hall. These have included The Business Energy Challenge Awards, Remembrance Sunday and The London Open House, where over 3,000 guests visited City Hall for a look around.

What tips would you give to future applicants?

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions - you’re here to learn
  • Get involved in as much as you can – make yourself known
  • Hard work pays off
